More grandly called philately stamp collecting was all the rage in my schools days .... the 1950’s to 60’s. It, along with train spotting, were hobbies that even the school teachers were actively involved in - but then things were that much simpler in those pre-electronic days.
My personal interest was not so much in the artwork involved but in the geography and history that the stamps recorded; plus the challenge of trying to work where a stamp came from in order to put on the correct page of the stamp album.
But by the time I had started work other things took priority and almost all of my school days collection was sold. I did make a couple of attempts to revisit the hobby for our children but collecting bits of paper did not really meet more modern expectations and the hobby retreated from most families’ interests.
